Here’s a guest post from our Senior Enterprise Developer, Shikhir Singh.
At SenchaCon 2013 this week, BlackBerry and Sencha will be announcing a new major upgrade for the BlackBerry 10 Theme in the new upcoming version of Sencha Touch 2.3. Using this new BlackBerry 10 Theme, Sencha Touch developers can now create HTML5 apps that are nearly indistinguishable from native Cascades apps. In many cases, HTML5 apps running on mobile devices can perform nearly as well as native apps which can make HTML5 an excellent alternative to native development. In fact, Sencha has a knack for showing that HTML5 is ready for modern mobile application development. Last year when Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook’s biggest mistake was betting too much on HTML5, Sencha took offense. To prove Mark Zuckerberg wrong, Sencha made a new Facebook app they called Fastbook; which in many ways performed better than Facebook’s own native app.
Using Sencha Touch with the BlackBerry 10 Theme, developers can build their own HTML5 apps that look like native Cascades apps. The beta version of the BlackBerry 10 Theme has been available since Sencha Touch 2.1; however, this new upgrade to the BlackBerry 10 Theme in Sencha Touch 2.3 Beta will now emulate many more UI components. Also, nearly every existing UI component in the previous versions of Sencha Touch has been upgraded to provide a more authentic BlackBerry 10 look and feel. The following is a list of some of the major components that have been themed for the new BlackBerry 10 Theme.
- Action Menu
- Action Bars
- Application/Overflow Menu
- BlackBerry 10 Icons
- And many other form elements
Additionally, other UI components such as the Context Menu and the Activity Indicator are on the roadmap for the final release of Sencha Touch 2.3.
Developers at SenchaCon will have the opportunity to attend a half-day pre-conference, Sencha Touch on BlackBerry 10 Bootcamp, where they will learn how to build Sencha Touch apps for BlackBerry 10. At SenchaCon there will also be a session titled “Porting Sencha Apps for an Astonishing BlackBerry Experience” which will cover the new BlackBerry 10 Theme.
Additionally, BlackBerry team at SenchaCon will speak at the following sessions:
- Maximizing Your Mobile Apps Profits
- Building a Next Generation Mobile Browser Using Web Technologies
